Phenamacril: Wheat head blight in China will boost demand in 2017 03-29-2017

The predicted occurrence of wheat head blight in China will elevate the need for effective fungicides. The current most popular fungicide, carbendazim, is losing effectiveness, due to a long-term overuse. Hence, the new star fungicide is likely to be phenamacril, which is marked by highly effective reduce of wheat head blight.

The Jiangsu Protection Station has predicted the extreme occurrence of Wheat Head Blight in several regions of China, especially in the regions along the Huai River, in Jiangsu and Zhejiang province, as well as Shanghai. As a result, the demand for fungicides will elevate in this year.


The estimated affected area by this disease will be 6.67 million ha in 2017,


According to market intelligence firm CCM, a special role will be giving to the fungicide phenamacril, which was developed and patented by the Jiangsu Pesticide Research Institue in China. This fungicide is one of the most popular among Chinese farmers and is known to be highly effective against wheat head blight.


The wheat head blight already showed heavy occurrence in 2016 in China, which has increased the attention and demand of crop protection departments among China significantly. Now, with the prediction of continuing occurrence of this disease, the demand will inevitably boost even more and open huge opportunities for manufacturers and traders.


What’s more, the Jiangsu Pesticide Research Institute has already increased investments in this promising fungicide. The core improvement areas contain whereby the enhancement of the production process, which involves lower the production costs and secures the supply of raw materials. Furthermore, the production capacity is going to be increased by about 850 tonnes per year top a capacity of 1,000 tonnes per year in total.


The occurrence of wheat head blight will affect areas in China, like the Jiangsu Province, for the seventh year in a consecutive row, becoming a serious affecting factor for the important wheat production. To be more specific, since the year 2010, wheat head blight has been striking Jiangsu Province almost every year, except for a comparable slight occurrence in 2011. However, it was quite serious in 2010 and 2012. 2016 was remaining an affected year for the disease and it has even caused a wider occurrence area, which will continue in 2017.


CCM sees a huge opportunity for doing business with phenamacril. This is because currently there are only a couple of pesticides against wheat head blight on the market so far. Particularly, single and mixed formulations of carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, triadimefon and thiram accounted for over 85% of the total registrations.


Notably, wheat head blight’s resistance to carbendazim, the current most popular fungicide, has increased due to the long-term, continuous and only use in recent years. Thus, a new fungicide to replace and reduce the use of carbendazim is in great need. Despite various pesticides for wheat head blight in the market, mainly benzimidazole, phenamacril, prochloraz and triazole fungicides, phenamacril stands out because of its good efficacy, significantly low toxins and improvement in crop quality and output. Also, phenamacril has effective control over rice bakanae disease.


 


Wheat head blight

Wheat head blight, or fusarium head blight, is a fungal disease of cereal crops that affects kernel development. The most important cause of FHB is the fungus Fusarium graminearum, which causes significant losses in grain yield and grain quality, while also resulting in the production of mycotoxins that affect livestock feed, the baking and milling quality of wheat and the malting and brewing qualities of malt barley.


Phenamacril

Phenamacril is a cyanoacrylate fungicide developed by Jiangsu Pesticide Research Institute in 1998. It has a special chemical structure and stands out among many other pesticides. Different from the mainstream fungicides is the broad-spectrum, phenamacril focuses on controlling wheat head blight and rice bakanae disease.


In 2005 and 2006, the company commissioned several institutes to do field trials on the efficacy of 25% phenamacril SC against wheat head blight. The institutes include: the Jiangsu Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, the Hunan Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, the Institute of Soil Fertilizer, Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ISF, HAAS) and the Institute of Plant Protection, Anhui Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
